Random photo from exactly a week ago! During my composting pickup run for this company in DC, I saw this mind-blowing spider on a nearby garbage can.
I attempted (poorly) to snap a photo using my phone and this is the result. I think it may be a crab spider but all I could think when I first saw it was, “Man, that spider has some massive forearms!”
That’s all for now!

The Keep’s garden plot about a month after planting!
This is around 7:15 pm on May 17th at the Wangari Community Gardens. The vegetables that are most visible are the 3 rows of arugula, the 5 tomato plants, a few of the 12 basil plants planted around the tomato plants and 1 of the 4 rows of mixed greens growing in the foreground.
We have already harvested arugula leaves twice since this picture was taken and they tasted excellent.
So a bit of a reflection on the past month, it turns out I really enjoy gardening. I find myself going by the our community garden plot a lot (like 4 or 5 times a week) even just for little things like pulling a few small weeds or checking out the other plots.
In addition, I’ve spent a lot of time working to rehabilate the Keep’s yard into something beautiful. I’ve been composting like crazy to improve the soil and so far I’ve planted 3 types of flowers as seeds in the front along with a marigold plant one of my housemates brought. Although it looks like the Keep will be changing in the next few months (maybe even moving out of the physical Keep/house itself), I hope I can grow some awesome flowers and vegetables until then.

The Keep’s garden plot at Wangari Gardens before planting!
On April 15th, my house of seven (including myself) began our first foray into community gardening. At this point, I was unsure of how much time I could put in. I was working pretty hard for the residential compost company in DC and I was hoping to just simply take a day a week to work on the garden.
In the end, that’s not exactly what happened…

Time for some Traveling!

For the first time in years, I will be traveling outside the US. Starting on Wednesday I will be traveling to Florence, Italy and then to cities in Morocco.

Since my life right now is quite flexible, I figured I should take advantage of the freedom of the early post-college years.

I’ll be taking photos to upload when I return so check back on 5/4 for a look at what I saw!

Today, the three most widely used methods of garbage disposal, which account for more than 99% of the country’s waste, are incineration, landfill, and dumping. All three have disadvantages.

Composting has clear advantages over all three … Conversion to a highly useable end product.
